Summary:

Podcast #010 length: 40 mins.

Ben Gokami gives Jim and Greg insights into the foreign world of the Japanese housing market. Ben is the owner of Columbia West International, an importer/exporter of wood products. Based in Vancouver, WA, Ben has been doing business and trading with Japan for over 30 years.

Japanese architecture has traditionally been typified by wooden structures, elevated slightly off the ground, with tiled or thatched roofs. Sliding doors (fusuma) were used in place of walls, allowing the internal configuration of a space to be customized to different occasions.

Besides these obvious physical differences in housing style, cultural differences between the US and Japan also lead to interesting differences between the Japanese housing markets.
